About AriyalurAriyalur is a town and the district headquarters of the Ariyalur district in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is situated at a distance of around 310 kilometers from the state capital Chennai. The name Ariyalur is said to be derived from the Tamil word “Hari Nindra Oor” which means the place where the Hindu god, Lord Vishnu is present. Ariyalur was part of Tirichinopoly district until the independence of India. After that it was a town in the Perambalur district until 2007. Then it became a part and the district headquarters of the Ariyalut district. The town of Ariyalur is rich in limestone resources. Alanthurayar Kothandaramasamy Temple in the town is famous for nine avatars of Hari carved from a single stone.
Administration of AriyalurThe municipality of the Ariyalur formed in the year 1994 looks after the administration of the town. The Ariyalur town is the part of Ariyalur assembly constituency which once in every five years elects a member of assembly for the Tami Nadu Legislative Assembly. It elects the Member of Parliament from the Chidambaram Constituency.
The municipality of Ariyalur was a second grade town panchayat during the British rule. It was given the status of first grade panchayat in the year 1995. But in December 2004, it was assigned the status of a third grade municipality. The municipality covers an area of 7.62 Sq.kms. The municipality consists of 18 members. These elected members take care of the six departments of the municipality; engineering, general, revenue, public health computer wing and the town planning. The supreme executive head of the municipality is the Municipal Commissioner, who takes care of all the administration of the town. The other 18 members of the municipality hold the legislative powers. The legislative body is headed by the Chairperson who is elected and he/she is assisted by the deputy chairperson. The estimated income of the municipality is 75,917,000 and the estimated expense per annum is around 63,703,000.

Economy of AriyalurThe town forms the main part of the Cauvery Delta where the main profession of the people is agriculture. Ariyalur is the hub to industrial houses like India cements, Birla Ultra Tech cements, Dalmia cements, and Madras cements. TANCEM, Tamil Nadu government’s factory was the first one to start the production of cement in Ariyalur.
The commercial crops grown in Ariyalur are sugarcane and cashew. The land of Ariyalur is pre dominant with red sand soil with black soil being scattered here and there. The soil in Ariyalur is suitable to grow dry crops. Rice is grown very rarely in this town.
